Danielle Mackey

Journalist

About

Based in San Salvador and sometimes New York.  Iowan.

Investigative, longform journalist interested in security and development in Central America and the U.S.

My work has appeared in The Intercept, The New Yorker, The Atlantic and The New Republic, among others. I’m in the middle of a long-term project about security policies, gangs and violence which I began publishing as a 2018 senior fellow at Brandeis University through the Fund for Investigative Journalism. I’m currently on a team investigating regional corruption for El Faro, in conjunction with Contra Corriente, funded by the International Women’s Media Foundation. Finally, I’m an Adjunct Lecturer at the CUNY Lehman College Now program.

I’ve spent most of the past decade in El Salvador. Former teacher, NGO-worker and horse trainer. Alum of NYU Global Journalism/Latin American Studies master’s program.

Fan of the Latin American cuento & crónica; property of the sassiest Salvadoran cat; have discovered life’s one objective truth: it’s always time for more coffee.
